BREC CLOSEPRINT
Standford Decontamination Project
BREC, the Parks and Recreation Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge, is removing “Production Tubing” pipe used as pipe rail from parks in East Baton Rouge Parish. The pipe is used to provide barriers between parking areas and program space within the parks.

Production Tubing” is pipe that was once used by the oil and gas industry to extract oil and gas from beneath the earth’s surface. BREC has determined that some of the pipe rail currently in the parks emits a low-level of radiation due to the build up of drilled materials inside the pipe. The contamination is contained inside a small percentage of the pipe rails in the parks. BREC has nearly completed screening the parks for rails with higher than expected levels.

BREC Superintendent, Bill Palmer states, “BREC is pro-actively dealing with this issue. We are going above and beyond that which is required by law, removing all rail pipes that are two times the background radiation, just to ensure that the safety of our citizens is not in question.”
